Dabbs Magic Dust

How to win football players…and influence coaches.

Life is not fair…it has been very good to me…probably more than what was fair.

Burnt Orange stories thru a TJ ---blue sky filter.

The Dabber:
Coach Royal told me that if I did not agree with something he was doing…I should come to him and close the door.  I could tell him anything…make any suggestion or complaint.  After we discussed it, he would make a decision…and that is what we would do going forward.  And whatever he decided to do…then I would then choose to support that decision... He would be fair and reasonable…but he was the one that would get fired for what we do…and we would support him…period.  I like that.  We would be on the same page…or we would not be there.  That’s fair…because he lived this…it was not a sales pitch.

When I got the head job at Irving, my first head coaching job…I called all the coaches in a meeting.  We talked about philosophy…goals…how to win.  I told them the first order of business was to make the players feel good about themselves.

Every day I want each coach to get with each player after practice…in the locker room.   No matter how hard you have been on them…no matter what went down during practice…if you had to be on them the whole practice…when we go in the locker room…I want you to get in front of each kid in your group…find something positive that he did…and tell him that.  Tell him he did something right.  If he just tied his shoes correctly…tell him that.

Find something he can take home and tell his parents he did right.  Find something he can build on.  Tell him he has value.   Tell him we care.  Tell him he can be better.  Kids deserve that.  I did the same for my coaches…coaches need that too.     TJ note:  That is "Dabbs Magic Dust" ---- Dust every player... and every coach...every day.

Coach Royal told me I needed to have every high school coach in Texas want his players to play for the University of Texas.  They should be calling me asking if we can take his best players.  We needed their support…and we needed them to be part of our team.  We wanted them to feel like they worked for the University of Texas…it was their right, privilege, and duty to encourage their players to see the University of Texas as their first choice…any place else was just another place to play.  He told me to never to talk down to a high-school coach.  They were the life blood of our future… they could feed us and help us be successful…they are important people; what they do is important, and we want them to know we feel that way.  It was not a ruse…it was how he felt.    TJ note:  this is also how Dabbs has treated me...and everyone else I have observed him be around.
